STORY
ORKNEY ROWING CLUB has been bottled at 58% to deliver a bold and intense single malt whisky that balances the sweetness of honey and vanilla with the fire of root ginger, carried on a wave of aromatic peat smoke. We have released 4,000 bottles and will donate a percentage of the proceeds from sales to the club.
Many centuries ago, Viking oarsmen propelled their mighty longships through thousands of miles of water in search of new lands. The members of Orkney Rowing Club may not travel thousands of miles, but pulling together as a team sits at the heart of everything they do. Established in 2014, the club began with just seven members and one boat – a 23-foot, clinker-build Shetland Yoal. Today, it has five traditional boats and around 40 members, and every year raises significant amounts of money to support local charities. As Orcadians, rowing is in our blood

SECRET STILLS
Gordon & MacPhail’s directors took a somewhat novel approach in the creation of this range. With its unequivocal name, Secret Stills has an aura of mystery, but with a touch of humour, since it is followed by an upside-down question mark: a little tongue-in-cheek fun at the expense of the whisky industry, which tends to take the naming of its products extremely seriously. Faithful to their reputation, the directors at Gordon & MacPhail created a set of specifications with very precise criteria to characterize this new range: the whisky comes from an anonymous distillery, is identifiable by a code, the first number of which designates the distillery, and the second a specific release, and it must be aged entirely in a cask belonging to Gordon & MacPhail.

Knockando is known for its bottlings of vintage whiskies. This one was matured in ex-bourbon and -sherry casks and bottled in 2016 as part of the ‘slowly matured’ series. With aromas of sultanas, figs and orange peel, and cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves on the palate, this whisky has plenty of punch. Try this with a strong blue cheese.
Nose: Plenty of dried fruit, orange rind and sweet oak leads among nutmeg and oily walnuts.
Palate: Baked apples, sticky toffee and toasted almonds combine among flickers of hot cinnamon.
Finish: Sherried malt and honey lingers.

In theory, there’s not a thing that could go wrong here. Colour: white wine. Nose: we’re extremely close to MMcD’s 2011 here, this one having just a little more gooseberries, kiwis and rhubarb. As well as, perhaps, more fresh kelp, which makes it more coastal. Obviously. Other than that, it’s one of those very fresh, crystal-clean young CIs. With water: once again, that old tweed jacket that’s seen many rains and many moons… Mouth (neat): class. Millimetric, with just an unexpected touch of rosewater on top of all this zesty, lemony, briny and smoky cavalcade. With water: ever saw all those lemon trees on Islay? They’re hidden within the central forest, that’s where the CI people harvest them while everyone’s busy on the shores… Finish: long, a tad sweeter and rounder again, but not quite syrupy. I think it would be fair to mention limoncello again. Comments: as good as a young CI can get. Quaffs extremely well.
